2014 Twenty Seven Fathoms Cabernet Sauvignon
2014 Vintage Notes
You could sum up the 2014 vintage in the Napa Valley in just a few words: unusually early and excellent. Drought conditions in California contributed to an early growing season. Mild spring and summer temperatures lead to an early harvest. For many of us, the grape harvest started two weeks ahead of normal. The crop size was somewhat smaller than the abundant 2013 vintage, but it was still very generous. Temperatures refrained from spiking during the hotter months, which allowed us to pick at optimum ripeness, resulting in intense aromatics and great fruit character. The grapes were happily fermenting in the winery long before potentially damaging, yet much-needed fall rains arrived.
2014 Tasting Notes
Go on; give this dark cranberry colored wine a swirl. Release the waves of dark ripe fruit aromas that lift out of the glass and evolve into a complex symphony of blackberry, white pepper and vanilla. On first sip this wine is loaded with the vibrancy of fresh fruit dancing with layers of dark chocolate, violet aromatics and exotic spice. Flavors of mocha, black olive, dark cherry and blackcurrant provide concentration without compromising freshness. A seductive fruit-focused core supports its full and silky texture. Tannins on the lingering finish are integrated and velvety making this wine extremely approachable in its youth. With a little time in the cellar, this wine will continue to age with elegance, power and grace.
