2015 Playing With Fire
A record setting rainfall in December gave us all hope that 4 years of drought would finally be over. The January that followed was one of the driest on record, and the drought continued to have an effect as the 2015 vintage started early. An overall mild winter and warm spring kicked caused budbreak to arrive early. A long cool, overcast month of May slowed the growing pace a bit and the summer provided moderate temperatures with only a couple of heat spikes. Overall, growing season conditions were practically ideal, the quality is exceptional and yields were lower than expected.
The first burst of aromatics boasts big ripe concentrated late summer fruit, followed by robust notes of blackberry, spice and a layer of toasty vanilla. A swirl or two release an abundance of chocolate, cherry, jasmine, fresh tobacco and a hint of sage. On entry there’s a seductive soft lushness with a round, yet chewy fruit-focused core. The mid-palate is consistent with the aromas, offering dark cherry, black raspberry, baking spices, red licorice and vanilla. The juicy and smooth finish has layers of complexity that ease into a playful experience.
