The winter of 2016-2017 brought us unusually heavy and welcome rainfall after several years of drought. Budbreak kicked off the growing season as the rains let up, approximately 10 days later than in 2016. The vines were thirsty from several years of drought and the abundant rainfall helped refresh our groundwater and set the stage for an historical harvest season. The growing season throughout the spring and early summer was fairly typical throughout the Valley, with the one exception of a random hail storm in June. Vineyard managers were well prepared and took proper precautions for the high heat spikes in September that pushed our Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec towards the finish line in early October. 2017 had its challenges, without a doubt, and while the yields were lower, the wines from this vintage are powerful, balanced and of high quality
Deep dark cranberry in color with intense aromatics of ripe blackberry, dark cherry, mocha, star anise and clove that lift from the glass with each swirl. Seductive layers of boysenberry, black raspberry and dark chocolate harmonize with baking spice and herbes de Provence upon palate entry. Rich and ripe black currant flavors reward the mid-palate along with layers of violet, dark chocolate, dried tobacco and a touch of wild honey. A lush texture, silky tannins and balanced acidity lead to a lingering cola spice and black cherry finish. An extremely approachable wine in its youth that should age gracefully for many years in the cellar.
